Napoli v Liverpool, Tuesday 17th September 8pm
Napoli outscored champions Juventus in last season’s Serie A, while Liverpool were just six goals shy of Man City’s 95 goal haul.
When two such offensive sides meet, then, you’d expect a goalfest. Not quite. It’s under a year since these clubs met at the same stage last season, with both securing 1-0 home wins. A repeat on Tuesday night might look decent value at 11/1, but we fancy a few more to hit the net this time around.
Despite topping the Premier League with five wins from five, Liverpool have conceded in all but one game. The loss of Alisson Becker has been felt, but Napoli haven’t exactly been parsimonious in defence themselves of late. They conceded seven in their opening two Serie A games, before beating Sampdoria 2-0 on Saturday.
As such, we fancy both teams to score here but it’s a rather stingy 6/10. Both teams to net and Over 2.5 looks a bit more backable at around 10/11. We’ve been on a decent run tipping correct scores, with Scotland 0-4 Belgium and Republic of Ireland 1-1 Switzerland two recent examples. We’re hoping that run continues and fancy a 2-1 win for Jurgen Klopp’s men at 8/1.
We’re all aware of Liverpool’s goalscoring threats in Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino but what about the Neapolitans? Lorenzo Insigne got the last minute winner in this tie last season and has already bagged two league goals this term. He’s 13/5 to get another on Tuesday, and 6/1 to nab the first goal with Bet365. Dries Mertens is their top scorer domestically and the Belgian is 12/5 to score past Adrian or 7/1 to open the scoring.
Paris Saint-Germain v Real Madrid, Wednesday 18th September 8pm
It’s somewhat of a surprise that these two big names have only met four times in the Champions League. The Group stage in 2015/16 marked their maiden meetings, with just one goal, for Real Madrid, in total. Fast forward two years and Madrid knocked the Parisians out in the round of 16 with two wins securing that they advanced 5:2 on aggregate.
Despite their head-to-head record, PSG are favourites here at 23/20, while another win for Zinedine Zidane’s side comes in at 21/10. We’re edging towards a draw, though, at 13/5. We also don’t expect it to be as cagey as those first two meetings four seasons ago.
It hasn’t exactly been a spectacular start to Real’s La Liga season and they’ve conceded, and scored, in each of their first four league games. Again, the odds aren’t in our favour with this one, at around 8/15 for both teams to score here. We’re going to stick our necks again on a relatively high-priced correct score and plump for a 2-2 Desmond at 10/1.
Casemiro grabbed the winner the last time these sides met in Paris, and he’s already opened his account domestically this season. He looks a decent punt, away from the big names, to score anytime at best price 10/1 and a huge 25/1 to put Real 1-0 up.
