Virgil Van Dijk is beaten by a Salzburg player.

Red Bull Salzburg v Liverpool, 5.55pm Tuesday 10th December

“It was far from being a perfect game, but it was a typical Liverpool game, very exciting and never over until the final whistle.”

Those were Jurgen Klopp’s words after his Liverpool side survived a Red Bull Salzburg comeback at Anfield back in early October.  “Very exciting” is probably an understatement for a rip-roaring thriller of a game that ended in a slender 4-3 victory for The Reds.

Defeat in the reverse fixture on Tuesday evening could end the Champions League holders’ defence of the trophy. A win for the Austrian champions is 29/10 and it’s certainly not beyond the realms of possibility, based on their form both domestically and in Europe this season.

Salzburg have scored more goals than all but two clubs – Bayern Munich and Spurs – in the group stages and this is all set up for another goalfest. Red Bull have averaged over three goals a game in Group E and Over 5.5 goals in this one looks attractive at 9/2. The hosts to score in both halves also catches the eye at 5/2.

Mo Salah got the winner at Anfield in October and he returned to scoring ways on Saturday at Bournemouth. The Egyptian is 7/2 to get the opener and 6/5 to net at anytime.

One man, or boy, you can’t ignore in the goalscoring markets is Erling Haaland. The Norwegian became the first teenager in history to score in five successive Champions League matches, at Genk, and he’s 31/20 to make that six in a row against the Premier League leaders.

Inter Milan v Barcelona, 8pm Tuesday 10th December

What a mouthwatering clash this is. The Serie A leaders face La Liga’s table-toppers, with the hosts needing a win to guarantee qualification to the knockout stages.

Despite an underwhelming Champions League campaign in which they’ve scored just seven times, Barcelona have already secured qualification. This may play into Inter’s hand if Ernesto Valverde decides to rotate his first team ahead of a busy domestic schedule.  With this in mind, we quite fancy an Inter win here but, unfortunately, the bookies seem to agree. It’s just 6/10 for I Nerazzurri to claim the three points, but a home win and both teams to score is certainly more backable at a best price of 2/1.

However, Barca haven’t exactly been banging in the goals in Europe – they’ve failed to score in 40 per cent of their European fixtures this campaign – and with nothing on the line for them we prefer an Inter win to nil at 11/5. Antonio Conte’s side haven’t been firing on all cylinders in this group either – averaging under two goals per game – and we’re plumping for an edgy 1-0 victory at around 8/1.

Inter aren’t short of candidates to pop up with a winning goal either. Only three players have scored more goals in this competition this season than Lautaro Martinez, who has averaged a goal every 86 minutes. The Argentine striker has netted five times in his last four appearances and he’s 6/5 to extend that scoring streak at the San Siro on Tuesday.
