Football Accumulator Guide

Football Accumulators

Football betting fans use accumulators to boost their odds and to make more cash. You’ll find out sooner or later that picking a winning accumulator is hard. Still, football accumulators are one of the most popular bets out there and millions of pounds are placed on accumulators every weekend of the football season.

An Introduction to Accumulators

An accumulator combines four or more selections into one bet. You place a single wager on that bet and you only receive your winnings if all of your selections are successful. Obviously there is much higher risk associated with these bets, if only one of your selections loses, you still lose your bet. On the other hand, the winnings of an accumulator are much higher than single selection bets on their own.

Accumulators are available in all sports. There are different rules for different sports. Most selections must be mutually independent i.e. you can’t place two selections from the same event in an accumulator. An accumulator is a bet with four or more selections.

Number of Selections                                                               Name of Bet

2                                                                                                             Double

3                                                                                                             Treble

4 or more                                                                                             Accumulator

There is no upward limit on the amount of selections you can place in an accumulator meaning it’s possible to win big from small wagers.

Football Accumulator Odds

Here’s an example of a football accumulator bet:

Fourfold accumulator on Champions League ties.

  • Borussia Dortmund to defeat Tottenham Hotspur @ 2.00 (decimal)
  • Real Madrid to defeat Ajax @ 1.57
  • Paris Saint-Germain to defeat Manchester United @ 1.44
  • Porto to defeat Roma @ 2.00

You multiply the odds of the four selections to get the odds of your accumulator, in this case 9.04. A €/£1 bet will return winnings of €/£9.04 if your four selections win.

Choosing your Accumulator

Although you can build accumulators across multiple events/sports, the most popular is football. Most fans stick with what they know best. They will pile a load of short-price outright winner bets into one accumulator. Some will add in some long-shot bets to try and boost their returns. There is no rule to abide by when placing accumulators and no guaranteed winning formula! The best advice you could receive is to stay away from the complete outsider bets. The temptation will be there to increase your odds but more often than not this results in failure.

Low & High Risk Betting

Most people opt for either a low or high risk betting strategy when it comes to accumulators. In reality, somewhere in between is your wisest choice.

Some people go for a large selection of seemingly low risk bets. This isn’t a wise choice. For example, if you picked the 10 favourites to win their match in the Premier League at the weekend. On their own each team could be odds-on favourite, but how often do you see 10 favourites winning all 10 games on a Premier League matchday?

Similarly it is not a good idea to go with a small selection of high risk bets. Four outsiders might yield high returns, but the chance of those four all winning are relatively low. If each team’s chance of winning was given as 33% (still a relatively good chance for a football game with three possible outcomes), the chance of all four winning simultaneously is 1.19% (.33*.33*.33*.33). As with all bets, the more unlikely the event (lower probability), the higher the odds. Punters use a high-risk betting strategy in hope of a big payout.

What Markets to Include in your Accumulator

As has been mentioned already, most people include the match outcome in their football accumulators (i.e. home win, away win or draw). Accumulators can be placed on a variety of markets and events, not just the outright match results like our example shows.

There’s nearly a limitless choice. You can choose over 2.5 goals in a La Liga match, a match result in the Premier League, a handicap line in Ligue 1 and an Asian handicap in the Bundesliga to fill up your bet. On top of this, some betting operators now allow for in-game accumulators. This allows you to pick four or more events in one match and place your bet on all four to occur.

For example, in Manchester United’s Champions League tie with PSG you could have had:

  • Man United to win @ 6/1
  • Both Teams to Score – Yes @ 4/5
  • Marcus Rashford to score first @ 11/1
  • Over 9 corners in the game @ 8/13

The odds on this same game accumulator occurring were 84.06/1, meaning a £/€1 bet would return £/€85.06.

Bet365 have the Bet Builder. You can build your football accumulator with selections from the same event. The Bet Builder is explained here.

Cash Out on Accumulators

Many bookmakers now offer a cash out option on their accumulator bets. Cashing out means closing your bet early so as to take some profit or limit your losses. It is more common on single bets but can be used to your advantage for a football accumulator.

However, do take note that many bookmakers don’t offer full value on cash out. It is good way to maintain a small profit margin on your bets but often it is best to stick it out with your accumulator to the end.

Variations on Accumulators

There are a number of variations on accumulators available to you when placing a bet. This allows you split your accumulators into an array of different bets.

A Yankee bet is a selection of four spread across different bets. Your four selections are matched with each other in different bet variations. From your four selections, you get 6 doubles, 4 trebles and one four-fold accumulator.

Lucky 15

As the name suggests, you get 15 bets from four selections in a Lucky 15. Along with the selections in a Yankee bet, you get your four bets placed as singles too. So that would be 4 singles, 6 doubles, 4 trebles and one four-fold accumulator.

Super Yankee

A Super Yankee, also known as a Canadian, is an accumulator bet made up of five selections. These five selections are matched with the others to create 26 bets, 10 doubles, 10 trebles, 5 fourfold accumulators and one fivefold accumulator.

Lucky 31

Just like a Lucky 15, this is five selections arranged into 31 bets. This is made up of 5 singles, 10 doubles, 10 trebles, 5 fourfold accumulators and 1 fivefold accumulator.

A Heinz bet is six selections split into 57 accumulator bets. These are 15 doubles, 20 trebles, 15 fourfold accumulators, 6 fivefolds and one sixfold accumulator.

Lucky 63

This is six selections that make up 63 bets. It is the same as the Heinz bet above with 6 single bets.

Super Heinz

Seven selections that make up a total of 120 bets. This is 21 doubles, 35 trebles, 35 fourfolds, 21 fivefolds, 7 sixfold accumulators and 1 sevenfold accumulator.

A Goliath bet is an array of bets composed of 8 selections. Each selection is combined with the other in a number of variations. This is made up of 28 doubles, 56 trebles, 70 fourfolds, 56 fivefolds, 28 sixfold accumulators, 8 sevenfold accumulators and 1 eightfold bet.

A Winning Accumulator

As shown above, picking a winning football accumulator isn’t easy. There are a couple of steps you can take to improve your betting strategy.

Do your research

At the bare minimum, you should have knowledge of the league standings, the fixtures and the odds for each game. There are some great websites to research stats and you can read some great match previews with betting tips here on

Value Bets

Using the research and data that you have found, you should have a reasonable idea of the value bets available. There are a couple of typical good value bets you should look out for. When a top team is playing a bottom side (especially away from home), this can provide good value. Also, keep an eye on recent form and goals conceded in each team’s recent games. If two mid-table teams are playing each other, look at their recent records. If one team is on a good run of results playing against a team on a losing run, there’s only one bet to go for.

Adding to your bet

To get the odds of your bet up, you’re going to have to pick a few riskier bets. Try to avoid anything below the 1.5 mark.  They provide so little value that they aren’t really worth putting in your bet. A home team priced anywhere between 1.5 and 2.0 is usually a solid choice.
