UFC 248 – Adesanya v Romero

The T-Mobile Arena is home to this weekends big middleweight title clash between Israel Adesanya and Yoel Romero . That particular division at the moment is stacked with potential, with 8 of the top 10 all believing they’re worthy of the next title shot. But in my opinion, they’ll be up against ‘Style Bender’ Adesanya. Taking into account that Romero had only fought once in 2019, his sharpness and power is doubtful considering the lack of competition he has had. Whilst the champion kept himself busy, with 3 wins from 3 last year, and against tough opponents might I add. His fighting ability is up there with the greats; alongside Jon Jones and Anderson Silva. This really is a matchup of strength against speed, where I see the latter coming out on top as Adesanya will reclaim his belt with a unanimous decision victory.

The co main event is another title bout, as strawweights Weili Zhang and Joanna Jedrzejczyk face off in what will surely be a fight not to miss. The Polish sensation is eager to claim back the title after her defeat to Rose Namajunas, back in 2017. Since then, she has been nothing short of proving her dominance in the division. Her opponent from China has also shown the world that she is full of talent. After a surprising, yet sensational stoppage of Jessica Andrade within 42 seconds of the fight, Zhang is looking to further her record to 21-1, which I believe she’ll do. Despite both fighters having an aggressive, forward approach, the champion will edge it through her ground game and counter-striking ability. It could go the distance, unless Zhang catches Jedrzejczyk as she tries to attempt a flurry of her usual combinations.

Beneil Dariush and Drakkar Klose compete in a lightweight affair, after a previous bout between the two had to be cancelled back in July 2019. Both men come into the fight off the back of victories, but Klose has not been able to finish his opponents off in his last 5 wins. The Iranian however, submitted Frank Camacho in his last outing, and I’m predicting a similar tale here. Dariush will be hoping to take the fight to the ground as quickly as he possibly can, with the win looking a for sure thing for him via submission or unanimous decision.

Welterweights Neil Magny and Li Jingliang serve up an interesting contest. Jingliang has impressed me in his previous few fights, especially after the knockout of Elizeu Dos Santos, late in the fight. Magny did not fight last year with various injury troubles, and he’s not been given an easy task to ease his way back into contention of a title fight. With the rust of not being in the octagon for so long, I see Jingliang taking this matchup. I’d even go as far to say that he will win with an early stoppage.

The main card is kicked off by Alex Oliveira and Max Griffin, in another Welterweight matchup that should see the Brazilian ease to victory. With both fighters having taken this fight on short notice, it does make you wonder whether Griffin would be up for the challenge, as Oliveira had been preparing to face Mickey Gall on last weeks fight night card, which unfortunately got cancelled. With this in mind, “cowboy” will be a sure bet to make it back into the win Collin after 2 defeats on the bounce. I might be writing the American off, but Oliveira’s overall ability is something that “pain” Griffin cannot match. I see this going the distance in a controlled and dominating performance for Alex, who is hoping the gain another contract with the UFC and can do so with an impressive performance on the main card.
